SERGEANT WILLIAM (NMI) ANDRE - CLASS OF 1942

COMBAT INFANTRYMAN - ACTIVE DUTY
EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bill's initial entry into the Army was to attend an IRTC (Infantry Replacement Training Center). The training was probably centered on the eventual June 1944 invasion of mainland Europe.
ASSIGNMENTS: Sergeant Andre was Killed in Action (KIA) after surviving the initial invasion of Europe at Normandy. The Allies were pushing the Germans back into their homeland, when they made a massive counterattack on the French-German border. This massive counter attack is called "The Battle of the Bulge" in military history. It was during this time, December 1944 and January 1945, that Europe incurred its coldest winter in the previous one hundred years and the casualties were exacerbated because of the cold. Bill was one of those casualties.
MAJOR AWARDS/DECORATIONS: The only known award is The Purple Heart awarded to all casualties, whether KIA or wounded. Bill could not have been over twenty one years of age.

ASSIGNMENTS: Spent 4 years in the US Navy - After Basic Training in San Diego and Flight Deck and Crash Crew Training "A" school In Philadelphia, Pa , was stationed aboard the Flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga CVA-14, for 3 years 4 months and 26 days (but who was counting!). Flight Deck Director, Crash Crew Director, Catapult Spotter, Fly II Petty Officer, Division Section Leader. Was aboard the Flight Deck when the Vietnam War started with the Gulf of Tonkin incident Aug. 1964. During my time aboard this carrier we lost 28 men (killed or captured). Many were killed in plane crashes on the flight deck; others were shot down and were killed, MIA or captured.

ASSIGNMENTS: PFC John Costa was stationed at Parris Island, S.C. for recruit training followed by technical training in Memphis TN. His last assignment was at the Navy Technical Training Center, Jacksonville FL. | | PFC Costa was killed on active duty, June 3, 1954, as a result of a mid-air collision between two Marine Corps A-1 Skyraider aircraft over the Everglades in Florida. PFC Costa, age 21, was aboard the aircraft serving as an aircraft maintenance technician. The aircraft were conducting a training exercise. PFC Costa and the pilots of each of the two aircraft were killed; only the maintenance tech in the second aircraft survived. | | John Costa was the son of Joseph and Susannah Costa of Depot Road. He had been in the Marine Corps for a year and a half when the collision occurred. His remains were transported to Salem, and he is interred at Hope Cemetery.

ASSIGNMENTS: He trained at Camp Hood, Tex., and was home for a short furlough at Christmas that year. Following his furlough, he went to Fort Ord, Calif. | Member of the 383rd Infantry Co. B of the 96th division, he was in active combat at Leyte and Okinawa.
MAJOR AWARDS/DECORATIONS: Killed in action on Okinawa June 11, 1945, he was returned to the United States for burial in Arlington National Cemetery in 1949. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals posthumously. | Maj. Gen. J.L. Bradley, who commanded the 96th division, cited the Salem lad for his bravery when he remained in a forward position during a withdrawal to care for and evacuate the wounded. “Despite heavy enemy fire, he did not leave the field until the last wounded man had been evacuated,” his citation reads. | His name is on the Peace Park Memorial, Okinawa, Japan. | His SHS Class of 1944 pin may be seen at the alumni office.

ASSIGNMENTS: My first assignment was to a communications station located in San Miguel, PI. From this station I was assigned to various ships active in the Tonkin Gulf monitoring enemy communications. I was also temporarily assigned to Da nang Naval Air Station where we flew communication missions over North and South Vietnam. The PI assignment lasted for 1 1/2 years. I was then transferred to a Communications station in Kama Saya, Japan where I acted as an instructor and was promoted to E-5. 1 1/2 years there and I was discharged with an honorable discharge in March of 1969 from California and returned to Salem where I entered the Ohio State Highway Patrol and served for 31 years, retiring from Columbus, Ohio.
MAJOR AWARDS/DECORATIONS: Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, 2 unit citations, and a good conduct medal.

EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bob McBane, after graduation, attended college until about mid-1944 and was drafted because of the need for infantry replacements. He received his thirteen week basic infantry training and was shipped to Europe in mid-February1945 to replace fallen infantrymen in the battle of Europe.
ASSIGNMENTS: PFC V.Robert McBane was killed by enemy sniper fire while on night patrol in Germany on April 19, 1945, a scant seventeen days before cessation of hostilities in Europe. He had been overseas for barely two months. The account of his death was not printed in the Salem News until May 7, the same day the huge headline at the top of Page One screamed: "GERMANY SURRENDERS."

Fall 1965 until summer 1968 attended Kent State University majoring in mathematics and psychology.
ASSIGNMENTS: 1. November 1969 until June 1974 served onboard the USS Newport News CA-148 "World's Largest Heavy Cruiser". The Newport News was over 700 feet long, over 100 feet wide, displaced over 100,000 tons, and carried approximately 1500 crewmembers onboard. The ship was decommissioned in 1976 and later scrapped in 1993/4. During my service time onboard the Newport News, I maintained, tested, operated, and repaired at one time or another all of the gun fire control systems that controlled the 3", 5", and 8" guns. The ship had four 3" guns, twelve 5", and nine 8" guns onboard. The ship had four 3", four 5" and two 8" fire control systems that controlled the guns. | 2. During February 1971 through December 1971, the Newport News was assigned to provide gun fire support for ground troops in Viet Nam. This was the ship's third assignment to provide this support. During this time period the ship fired over 50,000 rounds of 8" ammunition in Viet Nam to protect US forces. | 3. August 1968 until November 1969 stationed at USN Training Center in Bainbridge, MD (near Port Deposit, MD) for Gun Fire Control Technician Basic and Advanced Electronics Schools. | 4. June 1968 to August 1968 stationed at Great Lakes, IL Training Center for Basic Training (Boot Camp).

EDUCATION/TRAINING: Spent thirteen weeks in an IRTC (Infanty Replacement Training Center) in 1943 and was shipped to Europe to further train for the June 1944 Normandy Invasion of Europe
ASSIGNMENTS: Private Plegge survived the initial landing at Normandy and was with his Infantry Division into January 1945 when he was Killed In Action in Germany's final counter attack named the "Battle of the Bulge". Since this was during the period of Europe's coldest winter in one hundred years, all troops were at a great disadvantage in trying to survive in combat.
MAJOR AWARDS/DECORATIONS: Joseph's only known award is the Purple Heart awarded for KIA or wounds received in action.

ASSIGNMENTS: Killed in Action, March 21, 1945 on Iwo Jima. He was in the unit that raised the flag on Iwo Jima. The picture that was used for the USMC Memorial is actually the 3rd picture taken. The 1st picture has the whole unit with the flag--including Warren. This picture was in an article published in Life magazine at that time.
